This method is used to check the parameter 'Force SSL' from the website configuration.
Can you tell us which Joomla and PHP are you using ?
About the xml sitemap, you can activate the generation from the sitemap parameter. If you display by menu, this parameter is on the second tab "Parameters Sitemap" from menu edit view.
Once it's done the xml file will be generated when the sitemap will be displayed (without error). You can get by ftp or direct link ( url : www.mywebsite.com/sitemap.xml).
